I read this fascinating article today (seriously mind-blowing, I heartily recommed you give it a go) -- and now I would like to talk about it. :)

Okay so I have maybe been having A LOT OF THOUGHTS since I read this. Isn't it fascinating what the brain perceives as 'real'? This is The Matrix all over again -- what is real? Is it real just because you can smell and touch it? Or is it just as real when it's only our brains that perceive it? After all, what is 'real' if not impulses that the brain interprets? So who's to say that by reading, and writing as we do; and by having deep, meaningful relationships online with people we have never met, that they aren't real? That we aren't just as loved by them as by people we have seen, smelled, touched? God, I could read 48754974 words on the subject. This ties in neatly with the AI thoughts I've been having of recent -- sometimes I wish I'd had the foresight to go into neuroscience while I was at uni, because I could talk about this shit FOREVER.

Gives a whole new meaning to 'lost in a good book', not to mention living vicariously through so-called 'fictional characters' -- because aren't we, all of us, fictional characters to other people? I mean, really? Certainly we are to sociopaths, but why is it easier to insult or bully someone online, for example, as it is to do it to someone IRL, even though that person online is just as real as the person sitting next to you on the train, only they're sitting a continent away from you?

I have, for the past five years, lived my life through fictional characters so much more than in reality. And anyway, who the fuck are people to tell me that to me, this isn't just as real as their spouses they come home to every night? Who's to say that I haven't been in a relationship for the past eight-odd years, when I am in one every night when I open up a book, or my 'to-read' list of fic bookmarks? It's really all a question of perception, and how we choose to interpret our own experiences. Who's to say that this isn't my real life, rather than a state of fugue while I wait for it to begin?

...Wow, I appear to have A LOT OF THOUGHTS on the subject. But it's just so utterly fascinating to me. Descartes ftw! :) By all means, if you find this as fascinating as I do, come talk to me! :)

No, seriously. That book. The more there is from our beloved PTerry, the closer I think we're getting to this amazing run we've been on with him. T________T I AM STILL AS IN LOVE WITH SAM (AND SAM/SYBIL) AS ALWAYS. YOUNG SAM, OH MY GOD, BEST KID EVER.

...Anyway. The plot bunnies per page count is quite high, as always. IN FACT I have got this idea out of it that I am honestly squirming a little just from the joy of it. It is far too complicated to tackle immediately, and will be fairly long if I get my way, so it's going to have to wait until I can get through some of the things I'm already working on. ALL IN ALL, PTERRY I LOVE YOU AND YOU WILL NEVER, EVER DISAPPOINT. EVER. ♥♥♥

Now to find out what's been happening in the world during my self-imposed exile...

Incidentally, another fresh arrival is Cake Days, from the hummingbird bakery. MORE ON THAT LATER. :D

Gah. I hate you, brain. I hate you, body, for the next two or three days, depending (yes, icon is highly appropriate). I want to sleep for a sodding week.

In excellent news, I wrote up my theory submission essay yesterday, and am mighty pleased with it, if I say so myself. \0/ Now the motivational essay to do, and call up my docent for the academic reference, and I'm golden. /relieved

Other than that, submitted my h50_exchange assignment! \0/ Got my dream_holiday assignment! \0/ \0/ I have ideas already. It's kind of nice to think about Eames and Arthur again. <3 Mine and [ profile] delicatale's Pa Williams story should be up in the next couple of days! \0/ And I am half-way through editing our Bakery!AU Big Bang story! \0/ \0/ I haven't even looked at it for almost a couple of months now, and consequently I don't have every word of it burning in my brain any more, so I was looking at it with as fresh an eye as I'm likely to get. I LOVE IT SO MUCH, STILL. <3 <3 /accomplished

Work is being insane. We're changing up our Surgery department, and Jesus, SO MUCH STUFF TO DO. D: Probably why I've been so quiet around here -- literally have not had the energy to hit my flist, not even for the preeeety. Another week of that coming right up. Official unveiling on Friday 14th, so until then I may or may not be a bit skimpy around here. D: Good thing it'll be over after that -- PTerry's Snuff is out next week!! \0/ \0/ Have ordered it off Amazon, together with the cute 2012 dragon calendar -- which will be used for squee and tattoo ideas both. :D I've also splurged out on a few books -- delivery rates are ridiculous, though. D: Almost as expensive as the books themselves. Anyway, I shall have bookses next week! \0/ \0/ Meanwhile, have been re-reading Unseen Academicals, and as always marvelling at PTerry's mastery. And staying up waaaay too late. And being in furious love with both Nutt and Glenda. <3

Having trouble concentrating on actual writing. I have at least four -- no, five stories coming up, clamouring for attention in my head, so it's anyone's guess which one will be coming up through the floorboards next. Might make some progress today, who knows? After I've done the work I still need to finish for tomorrow. GAH. Okay, moar Bakery!AU until I manage to wake up properly. Can't even drink my tea without attempting to spill it everywhere. Fuck I hate that time of month. X|
sirona_fics: (bugger all this for a lark)
So I don't have a Tumblr, and this is unlikely to change any time soon (unless [ profile] quoththewriter does something pretty damn spectacular, and maybe not even then -- LJ is quite enough for me), so to keep up with Jizzy (because she is one thing in life damn well worth following), I've been getting RSS feeds of her Tumblr. And today's post contained this snipped of pure, unadulterated gold, a.k.a. Charles = Crowley, and Erik = Aziraphale. Observe:

Seriously though can we talk about what a good idea that is oh my FUCKING GOD, except of course Charles still has the bookstore and Erik still has the Bentley, because Charles is all too aware of how easily knowledge can tempt and Erik, well, let’s be honest, Erik gave Adam and Eve that flaming sword because he had to but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss it, all that power harnessed between his hands

And they’ve got The Arrangement, right, of course they do, how could they not, because that’s the whole thing about Charles and Erik that fits so well with the Crowley and Aziraphale dynamic, that pull between opposites, that balance they’re always seeking, and even in the X-Men canon they’ve really got An Arrangement of their own, throwing around “old friend” the way Crowley and Aziraphale toss out “Angel” and “my dear”

But in this, right, in this you’ve got Charles who didn’t fall so much as saunter vaguely downwards and Erik, Erik who probably kind of wanted to fall but just couldn’t, couldn’t because he felt this sharp vicious loyalty to being this higher power—because that’s just Erik all over, isn’t it, Erik “We Already Are The Better Men” Lehnsherr, who is who he is and no apologies, and Charles who certainly isn’t evil but sees so much more grey than Erik does (because regardless of how you feel about either one of their methods in canon you can’t deny that “Kill the humans, kill them all” is certainly a more black and white view than “Don’t kill the humans, live in harmony with them and only read their innermost thoughts/make them think it was their idea when it’s really necessary”)

And oh, oh, the thing about Good Omens that makes it so compelling is that Crowley isn’t a demon and Aziraphale isn’t an angel, not really, not anymore, they’re both so human now and so not human too that they’re this unquantifiable third thing and I always, always, when I’m thinking about this book I always come back to Crowley saying, “Funny if we both got it wrong, eh? Funny if you did the good one I did the bad one, eh?” and Aziraphale saying “Not really,” and THAT IS SO CHARLES AND ERIK and and and

Really I just want Erik the angel driving around in his Bentley and miracle-ing his way out of speeding tickets because traffic cops are obviously Charles’ and Charles the demon cheerfully slipping a copy of Written on the Body into the priest’s bag in the back room of his bookshop because he knows all it takes is one little spark, that hint of knowledge and then no one can help but be consumed

I... actually physically want to CRY with how much I want this. This would make my entire existence. Aside from the fact of how damn apt it is, how much it just fits, you know that she and [ profile] postcardmystery would create something incredible.

Seriously. Crying with the force of my want/need for this to happen. Fellow PTerry and GNeil and Charles/Erik and Aziraphale/Crowley fans -- thoughts?

Gah, second-to-last pre-holiday shift, I AM CLIMBING THE SODDING WALLS. [ profile] quoththewriter and [ profile] zolac_no_miko were wonderfully distracting this morning, but it's the middle of the night now where they are (or it was when I started writing this post, what the hell) and they are asleep and I am BORED. In liew of shooting the wall and pestering a John (whom I do not have, such a tragedy), I am making this here rambling post.

Last night was--amazing. The Dragneto pics exploded everywhere, and it was filled with glee and rainbows and unicorns and filthy, filthy Charles whom I adore. MUCH FUN WAS HAD. I trust everyone has seen it already? IF NOT, REFER TO MY PREVIOUS POST. THAT SHIT IS UNMISSABLE. Today seems rather grey by comparison, not to mention it's one of the hottest days of the month today and I am melting. D:

Anyway. As of Friday I will very likely be incommunicado for pretty much a week. There's no internets where I'm going, SO I AM PREPARED TO WALLOW TERRIBLY about missing a new Carpe Brewski chapter and talking to all you guyyyyys. D: But I also plan to mess about in the water and soak up as much sun as I can find and read a shitton of books (I am taking eight. I hope they'll be enough). I am also taking Danny (my laptop), so I may or may not write all the words before I die of boredom. Even though, bearing in mind that baby Nicky is coming with, I doubt boredom will be in rich supply.

Is there a point to this? WHY, YES. If you need me for any reason at all after late tomorrow night, YOU'D BETTER GET ON IT NOW. In the immortal words of Goose's wife Carole, [...] Take me to bed or lose me forever! (Yes, Top Gun was on last night. The homoerotic subtext is SO MUCH MORE BLATANT at (almost) 30 than it was at 17 when I last watched it. What an innocent I was...)

Also, Happy Birthday, Scotty and Alex!! OH MY BOYS, I <3 YOU SO MUCH.

OH OH AND ALSO. Because I get easily distracted when bored. Some of last night was also spent working with [ profile] delicatale on this fantastic idea she god, namely, ANGELS WITH MACHINE GUNS. ONE OF WHICH IS STEVE MCGARRETT. Go check the awesomeness out, it is here!! A Certain Someone on my flist should be sprinting over, you know who you are, babe. XP

If there was one thing I wish I could be good at, it's drawing. Then I would be able to leave you with the visual for this scene that has been in my head all day. As it is, I shall have to rely on words altogether. So here it is, a few scenes from a story I shall probably never write in full, or inflict on the world anywhere else.

Scene: serious writer Erik working on his next novel. Every night Erik hands his amanuensis/beta reader/hopeless crush Charles the finished scenes from the night before. )

I've made a bunch of other offers at [ profile] help_japan. I sort of started checking the Interesting Stuff post (which is full of so much awesome, OMG, how did I not look before?), and I got to thinking -- I actually have a bunch of signed first editions of books at my house! That's what working at The Bookshop did for me, I guess. So I had a nosey, and this is the loot I managed to unearth:

1. A signed first edition copy of The Ring of Words: Tolkien and the Oxford English Dictionary by Peter Gilliver, Jeremy Marshall and Edmund Weiner, OUP (2006). The book is in pristine condition. Link to auction HERE.

2. A beautiful first edition copy of Elegance by Kathleen Tessaro, Harper Collins (2003). The book is in pristine condition, the only wear and tear that of sitting on my bookshelf. It's beautifully made -- the pages are lined in black, it has an inbuilt bookmark, and the cover has a soft pearly sheen. Link to auction HERE.

3. A signed first edition copy of The Book of General Ignorance: A Quite Interesting Book compiled by John Lloyd and John Mitchinson, Faber and Faber (2006). The book is in pristine condition; it's the book containing questions and answers from the British show QI, hosted by Stephen Fry. Link to auction HERE.

4. A signed first edition copy of Paradise Lost: An Illustrated Edition with Introduction by Philip Pullman, OUP (2005). The book is in excellent condition; there's a slight mark on the book jacket, as you can see in the picture. The copy is signed by Philip Pullman. Link to auction HERE.

5. A signed limited first edition copy of Peter Pan in Scarlet: The Official Sequel by Geraldine McCaughrean, OUP (2006). The book is in pristine condition; it's one of only 1500 limited first edition copies signed by the author. Link to auction HERE.

6. I am also donating a year's worth of letters and postcards from Bulgaria, one per month. All will be handwritten, and I'll include as much stuff as possible -- pictures of my city, parks, the flowes on my balcony, anything you want, really. Me and my cousin are planning a two-week long trip around the country this summer, so I'll be able to collect lots of strange and interesting Bulgarian bits and pieces. Link to auction is HERE.

I want to tell you a story. This may or may not serve as a nice intro post for all the new people around here, who have flattered me by wanting to stick around for some reason that escapes me.

My childhood amidst books: a love story )
