Day 2
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.
Well, you know that any gem I come across, I tend to shout it from the rooftops, so. I'm gonna rec you some of my absolute fucking FAVOURITE stories ever. Plus a new shiny thing that I hope will turn into a trend, because DAYUM.
Considering I have over 1,000 memories entries, this isn't going to be easy. So I'm going to stick to the stories that, today, right this minute ring with me. Those are liable to change within hours, even minutes, but right now, let me tell you about things that make my heart quicken and my blood rush to my head.
H50
I solemnly swear not to set myself on fire by
sheafrotherdon
--Steve and Danny get marred--Steve-and-Danny-style.
Hilarious and heartfelt and so fucking fond. Makes me want to laugh and sob and cuddle someone to me simultaneously. <3
Set Fire to This Card House by
zarah5
--AU. In which you'll find agents, hotel beds of varying sizes and sensible rules that still deserve to be broken.
This will forever be one of my favourite stories in the fandom. Forever. It has everything I love to distraction about the boys, and that little bit more that makes it truly stand out.
Months and miles from dreams by
delicatale
--where Steve is an active SEAL, and Danny owns a gym in New Jersey.
Quite aside the fact that I was part of this all the way through, and it brought me and
delicatale closer, it is a hugely ambitious fic that embodies everything about her writing that I love and that makes me go all *___________*. A stunning achievement.
Life Unexpected by
kitsune_tsuki
--When Danny blows out his knee for good he has no idea what he's going to do with his life. And then Matt calls and tells him about a couple of clients who are looking to sell an idea they have for a television show, and are looking for a consultant.
Hilarious and insightful and just so bloody them. <3
XMFC
One by
grim_lupine
-- Before, Erik had always been able to hold onto the words You’re not alone, because he knew that with one mental stretch, Charles would be right there. Charles was always there, sliding into his mind as if it was where he belonged, a warm presence that Erik would sometimes wish he could allow himself to get lost in.
This one honest-to-god makes me want to sob my heart out. It is so fucking beautiful, though. :')
Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace by
luninosity
--Erik learns to knit. Then they live their lives. Eventually, at the end, someone makes a proposal. And there is, despite indications to the contrary in section two, a happy ending.
I thought long and hard whether to rec this story or this one (and its part two), which you should also go and read immediately, but in the end this one won over, simply because it is heartbreaking yet beautiful and hopefull and leaves you with a chest full of fluff, wraps you in a warm blanket and cuddles you to it. They both do, but this, this one--well. If you're interested, check out my comment to the story. It really says it all.
Harry Potter
Controlled Burn by
tigersilver
--Deceased Professor Severus Snape had always claimed he could ‘stopper death itself’ with his skill at Potions. What he did not make generally known to his young students was that a Potion could accomplish so much more than merely halt the Grim Reaper. In the proper circumstances, that is, and with the correct motivators, Time itself could be altered. Invoking the ancient Beltane Magic, a bewildering variety of ingredients, Snape’s most private jottings and his sage, acerbic counsel (albeit portrait-purveyed), Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy (singly and together) attempt to set to rights a massive wrong—a rift in the very temporal fabric—that only they perceive clearly…and perhaps not always as clearly as all that, either. Their joint efforts have/will/might, could and can remould the very foundations of their lives and the lives of others. And, if Janus should smile, they will succeed.
One of the most incredible Harry/Draco stories I have ever read. My thanks go to
altri_uccelli for pointing me in its direction. The sheer scope of it is mindblowing, and so is the execution. A real stunner.
Inception
Tilt by
jibrailis
--Arthur is a journalist, Eames is an enigmatic, on the verge of a has-been film star.
Always and forever one of my absolute favourite fics in this fandom. It's like
jibrailis sees into my fucking soul and writes these incredible, heartfelt things that I want to sob all over because I will never be as good as her.
The Daughters of Eve by
weatherfront
--This is a story about Mallorie Miles Cobb.
Simply astounding.
weatherfront will always be one of my favourite writers ever, but this story, I just. I haven't the words.
Worth by
climb
--A The Sandman-inspired backstory.
Simply put, incredible. In-fucking-credible. This fandom regularly leaves me gobsmacked with the sheer amount of talent in it, and this is a prime example.
Sherlock
Burning up through your veins by
verasteine
--Even Sherlock has feelings, no matter how hard he's learned to deny himself.
Achy and pining and just dkhfjhgjhg Sherlock in the best tradition of being himself. <3
Shadows on the Wall by AraSigyrn
--John came back from Afghanistan psychic.
Still one of the most amazing Sherlock stories I have ever read. *_______*
For the shopping list you always lose by
stardust_made
--Where Sherlock goes home for Christmas alone, and realises how much he misses John.
The first story I read by
stardust_made, and still a firm favourite. Sherlock is lovely here.
Random
Drastically Redefining Protocol by
rageprufrock
--Where Arthur is a prince and Merlin is an overworked intern at a Paediatric ward.
I'm not even in this fandom. I'm not, I promise. But this thing is without a doubt one of my absolute favourite fics in any fandom, and is saved on my computer desktop as such.
Shiny new thing
keep the car running by mononoke.
--It’d just been a line, something that rolled off his tongue after the relief of escaping with his life, before he was back on his feet and off to help chase down a madman. He didn’t think it’d ever happen. (Or: the one where Brandt gets to seduce the rich guy)
This is Mission:Impossible 4, and also ONE OF THE HOTTEST THINGS, GODDDDD. Brandt gets to seduce the rich guy. That ought to be enough for you. Seriously, read it. The voices are so authentic, and it just reads beautifully.
