sanity is overrated

I... have signed up for [livejournal.com profile] h50_bigbang.

I foresee A LOT of bb!Danny and his ~feelings for bb!Steve in my future. ♥

Thank god we've until 1st July to get our acts together!

Yay! I love brainstorming! My brainstorming buddy [livejournal.com profile] pkwench has only just started watching H50, so I need another buddy! \o/

Hey, do you know of good Hawaii resources? I would like to try not too have too much fact-checking fail in my BB, if I decide to go the tsunami route...

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, by some bizarre stroke of luck, one of the first people I met on LJ is from Hawaii, and she's just offered to be my research resource, for which I'm more grateful than I can say -- but if/when she points me towards stuff, I'll let you know! My biggest issue is with the language -- because language is kind of a kink of mine, in that its proper use can make me all hot and melty, so I want to be as accurate as possible in my writing.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, me too! Language, FTW!

And they use the language a lot on the show, so I want to make sure I get it right, if I use it myself —and I really would like to.

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we'd have to, really, if we want to get the feel of it right. And Danny can grumble some more about it being some sort of coded exchange, and can't they just speak English already?! And then Steve will smile at him, and Danny will get a little weak at the knees, which will only annoy him more.

Re: brainstorming... can you actually remember what Steve said about his dad sending him away? When did that happen? Because I have this idea -- what if Steve gets shipped off to mainland after he graduates, and he joins the Navy, and sort of loses touch with Danny? And Danny goes back to Jersey, and becomes a cop, and meets Rachel, and has Gracie, and because the world hates him, once they divorce Rachel moves to the same pineapple-infested hellhole that he'd had to endure for a whole year once, and that reminds him of bloody Steve at every corner, Steve whom he's never quite managed to forget, not even when he'd fallen in love with Rachel, there's always been this niggling pain somewhere in his chest that Steve had to go away, and Rachel has always wondered why Danny watches CNN and foreign correspondents obsessively, but Danny's always put her off when she asked; and then one day, a couple months after he's back on that damn island, he gets a call, and Steve's dad is dead, and he goes to investigate (he asks for the case, because, of course, he knew McGarrett senior, if only vaguely), and then he hears that voice that has haunted his dreams for the past ten years telling him to drop his weapon...

What do you think? Too much? Melodramatic? Should I have it end happily ever after back in high school? But this damn idea won't leave me alone! Grr.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's awesome! But honestly? That's two different fics. One high school AU with a happy ending, and one other AU, where they met in high school and Steve broke Danno's poor, exposed heart, and then Danno comes back to Hawaii and there are feeeeeeliiiiiings again.

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's two different fics. -- OH GOD THEY ARE, AREN'T THEY. D: WELL, I'LL JUST HAVE TO WRITE BOTH AT SOME POINT. OH GOD. /0\

The only question is, which one is Big Bang-length, and which one is a little less long? AND WHICH ONE OF THE TWO I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MORE, SINCE I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT BOTH OF THEM?!

Plot killer bunnies. They should be taken out back and SHOT.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If I were writing this, WHICH I'M NOT, the High School AU would be Big Bang-length, and the reunion story would probably be shorter and more angst-filled. Just my opinion.

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm just going to start writing, and see where it takes me. I still kinda really want to make it all one story -- where there's the whole high school romance in the first part, and they fall in love, and then maybe Danny has to go away just for a couple of weeks over the hols to stay in Jersey, and that's when Steve's mom dies, and by the time he comes back everyone's shellshocked and Steve and Mary are gone and Danny's poor heart breaks in so many pieces, because on one hand, poor darling Steve, but on the other hand he feels kind of deserted, since Steve left without a word apart from a short letter that has suspicious drop-like patches on it, promising to keep in touch with Danny, and then the second half of the story happens.

Meh, I still don't know. Like I said, I'll start writing and see what happens, see where the story will take me. It usually works!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That works too, except maybe Steve got packed off before the letter could be delivered... and then maybe Danny could find the letter in Steve's stuff years later, because we all know McGarrett's a sentimental squishy marshmallow who would hang onto something like that, even if he kept it tucked away in a shoebox in his dad's house or something.

So, a Part I and a Part II, fifteen years later?

But you have to fix it with a happy ending, you hear? No breaking my heart and then not fixing it!

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes! Or maybe Danny finds it in McGarrett senior's stuff, because he was too paranoid, and too worried about Steve and Mary to let anyone know where they were going, and didn't pass it on as he'd promised Steve to do.

OR Danny might get the letter -- but Steve had been so distraught when he'd written it that it's literally no more than a note, explaining what's happened and promising to keep in touch -- only the email address he'd scribbled is smudged by said suspicious drop-like spots, and Danny never does work out what it's supposed to say, and so he can't write. And so they lose touch.

And then -- 15 years later! And maybe Steve will find the letter at some point, maybe when he's helping Danny move in with him later on, and it will be almost transparent from having been read so many times, folded and refolded, and just held, and he can see the smudged ink, and he'll know why Danny had never written, AND HE WILL LOVE HIM EVEN MORE.

But you have to fix it with a happy ending, you hear? -- ARE YOU EVEN KIDDING?! I cannot, cannot NOT write a happy ending. It's engraved in my genes, this need to have a happy ending. Like Ms Austen once said, [paraphrased] "If I can't have a happy ending, then by god I will at least give my heroine one." I live by this rule. You have nothing to fear! <3

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yay! Yes. I like ALL of that! Danny is totally the kind who would keep the note even if it's almost totally illegible.

Yay happy ending!

Except for ONE small problem. When Danny and Steve graduated high school (they're about my age), email wouldn't have been as widespread as it is now. I only got an email address myself when I got to university when I was 19, and it was still a big deal where my friends and I were concerned. I'd suggest a telephone number instead. :)

[identity profile] sirona-gs.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Duly noted! I can't believe I didn't think of that! I myself only got an email when I was 17, and they were only just getting popular then.

And if it's a number, then three digits are smudged, and it makes it completely untraceable without calling like 5483654 people trying to find Steve, and Steve's dad would have holed himself up at work and unreachable before Danny leaves, so. Neat! <3

Danny is just a big softie. I'd bet he kept that note in his wallet for years, all the way through academy and meeting Rachel, and only maybe moved it somewhere safer when it started falling apart, around the time he and Rachel got married and Gracie was born, and then he swapped the note with Gracie's picture, because they're equally important to him.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a plan to me! :)

I'm really excited about your story!

What do you need to know...I'm a reference librarian and theoretically can find things....

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
HOLY CRAP! \o/

*glomps you forever*

I haven't given my plot much thought beyond TSUNAMI! YAY! \o/

But yeah. If there's a good resource for the Hawaiian language out there (as in, how it can be properly inserted into English the way they do on the show) and maybe some stuff about how Hawaii is equipped to deal with natural disasters, that would be awesome!

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll do a little poking around when I get home tonight and see what I can find for you.

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I decided to count it as a reference question and did some research for you. Here is what I found about Tsunamis, particularly in Hawaii:

Tsunamis

It should be a publicly viewable Google Doc so let me know if you have issues. I hope this is the kind of stuff you wanted. Let me know if you need anything else with the Tsunamis. This stuff is so interesting!

I'll look at the language stuff later.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's fantastic! Thank you!

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. In case you can't tell I have an obsessive need to KNOW things. :)

[identity profile] shinysylver.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
So I compiled a list of Hawaiian Language resources in a public Google Doc. If you have any problems or questions let me know.

Hawaiian Language

I hope those are helpful!!

Why hello there! Did I hear someone say "Hawaii resource"~?

We've never met, but as I've already agreed to help Sirona, I don't mind sharing the wealth, if only out of an anal-retentive and over-protective need to ensure that people get things right. I was born and raised in the state of Hawaii, so if you have questions/need pointers, feel free! ^_^

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you are awesome! I am really, really OCD about trying to keep things "realistic" (within the realm of fic, obviously).

May I friend you? That way I can harass you at will occasionally pose questions without having to search through [livejournal.com profile] sirona_gs's contact list like a total creeper. ;)

[identity profile] zolac-no-miko.livejournal.com 2011-01-26 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man oh man, I know the feeling. I am a research junkie.

Haha, sure! Go right ahead. ^_^
