That person (re: the comments on LJ) is just dumb. Even if you just use it as a blog, basically every other blogging system has navigable comments. If you don't care what people have to say on your LJ, then write it in a freaking Word doc and be done with it. Sure, fandom's complaining a lot about the changes because it affects what we do, but this is a bad idea for EVERYONE. Not all the outrage is from fandom--it's giving a lot of "normal" people a tough time as well, and the way it was implemented kind of underhandedly is sketch regardless of why you use LJ. While they do have a point about fandom's tendency to take over already existing services for their own purposes and then freak out when change is made that disrupts fandom's way of things (see: Delicious), their argument holds no water.
(Although I do think a fandom conversation needs to be had about the way we use services and how the focus should shift into creating more of our own, ala AO3 and even Dreamwidth, though I don't use that service for many reasons.)
