I'm trying to pin down just why I like Matt Smith's Eleven and Series 5 so damned much (as a result of finally making time to watch The Big Bang).

Someone on my flist posted this re: Matt Smith's Doctor last night: "I think he's lovely, and love him possibly a leetle more than Tennant (though, I love him too!) because he pulls off aged and magnificent whilst also being a much softer, sweeter Doctor than any of the others, I think - I love how he kisses Amy on the forehead and cups Rory's cheek with a kind of loving ease that never becomes cliquey or annoying."

I think this hits it on the head exactly. The Doctor is, essentially, a strange old man with the powers of a (demi-)god, who enjoys meddling and poking into things that don't make sense (see my quote icon). But he is also a deeply loving and caring individual (unless you pull out a gun) who finds his reason for living on in helping other people/species out. He has a deep respect for life, and for other species' beliefs and points of view (as long as nobody gets hurt or maimed - well, only a little maimed, maybe) - see the Ood. And people love him in return, despite his strangeness (yes, it's a word - because I said so, that's why) - or maybe because of it.

I love his interaction with Rory and Amy in The Big Bang. I love how they both love him so much, and how he cares not just for their physical well-being but their pshychological one, too. Like how he doesn't wake Amelia to speak to her (and probably damage her for life), but rather leaves her clues while she sleeps - like some sort of a surreal dream. I loves the 'live well, love Rory' monologue and the kiss on her forehead - even now it makes me tear up a little. And I love so much the way Amy is so upset later on, even if she can't work out why, because The Doctor being gone leaves a great big gaping hole in your life and you can't help but feel it.

And then there's the one-liners that express more than pages and pages of script. Series 5 has more of these than any of the other four put together: for example, where Rory simply says, "How could we forget The Doctor?!" Because he's clearly such a huge part of their lives, and they feel incoplete without him. I don't think a page-long monologue could express it any better. Any so many others that scream 'Doctor-speak' - "I'm definitely a mad man with a box"; "Something doesn't make sense; let's go and poke it with a stick", "Bowties are cool" (I think this one will become an emblimatic saying), "Don't diss the sonic" and so on.

Anyway, I love Matt Smith's Doctor's weird old shoes that are falling apart, and his 'bowties are cool' thing, and the 'fish fingers and custard', and how obviously he fails at pretending to be human, but how goofy and endearing he is while doing so - you can't help but love him. Until someone threatens something he holds dear, be it a person or an ideal, and then he pwns like nothing else in the Universe. I think I like him so much because he fits closer to who I think The Doctor really is, as well as the Old!Who image, than Tennant and Eccleston's shiny and sexy portrayals did.

Anyway, I can't believe they're making us wait until Christmas 2010 for the next bit! /goes into withdrawal

Ten was very self-assured. The only time Eleven seemed to show that sort of confidence was when he was talking about how there's only one thing you should never catch in a trap in the Angel episode. Eleven seems surprised by things and then surprised that he can still be surprised. The double whammy of joy that he gets from experiences makes me think he's much happier in himself than Ten ever was.

Moffat is a genius and we must all accept this and bow down to his awesome.

EXACTLY. Tennant always seemed so assured, so in control, that he seemed to have lost the joy for life, the childish wonder of the universe that keeps a Time Lord going. Matt Smith has that in spades, he is in touch with his inner child much more - as seen by how well he got on with Amelia in the beginning! He still has all that knowledge that would break a human mind, but he doesn't let it control him like Nine and Ten did.

Moffat's done very well indeed. I know that there are a lot of people on the [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho comm that have been slagging him off and saying he's lost the plot, but I really like the way he crafted this season, and the new characters he introduced. I even like Amy! Though Donna Noble is still my favourite companion. I can't wait for season 6!

Ten was my Doctor, and the one I will forever be in love with - I loved his knowledge and his snark and his control and his crazy and his dark and his funny, but I do like Eleven a whole lot. :) I especially love how he is very self-aware, and almost mocks himself, eg with "Something doesn't make sense; let's go and poke it with a stick." I think that self-awareness is something he learned from when he was Ten. He's seen even more of the worst of himself now, and seems to be keeping an eye on it.

VERY, VERY TRUE. I don't think he would have been the way he is now if it hadn't been for Ten's experiences.

You know, it's totally weird - I absolutely adored Ten. I truly did. I thought he was the best thing ever, with the crazy hair (YES), the battered Converses, the suit... just everything about him. He was my Doctor, forever. And fuck, I have the perfect picture for this comment, but it's on my laptop at home - I'll post it when I get back tonight.

And then Eleven came along, and I loved him from the start, but he just seemed to evolve, become more The Doctor than just a ridiculously intelligent man whose rage bubbled just under the surface. I mean, Ten had all those incredible moments, truly - I mean, I can't see Eleven react to the Master's loss quite like that - but I can see A LOT of potential for Eleven. I'll tell you what - I would PAY to see Eleven meet Capt'n Jack.

IDK, I'm rambling now. My point is, I used to adore Ten before I knew there was Eleven; once he showed up, it was all over for me.
