Sirona's Epic Clint/Coulson Fic Rec List!
Sooo. Almost an entire month ago (because I fail so hard at things right now) I promised ironfries that I would compile a Clint/Coulson fic rec list for hir, so I could incept hir into the wonderful world of the sniper who loves his agent and the agent who can't (well, okay, he can, but he'd rather not, it would be so boring) live without his sniper.
In order to achieve this, I have solicited the help of a number of excellent people, who have gifted me with the wisdom of their experience. Thus, I present to you my rec list of awesomesauce C/C fics that I have read, re-read, adored, and bookmarked the hell out of.
Now, it's basically a given that I'll have missed something. A bunch of things, even. So, please, feel free to use the comments to add to this list -- because sure as hell, there's no way I'll have read everything that is out there; rather, it's pretty much an iron-clad guarantee that I won't have.
(In order of date of bookmark, oldest first.)
I've got your words in me by eleanor_lavish
Clint doesn’t fuck up assignments very often. This time, he’s pretty glad he did.
--The fic that started it all for me. I am actually ashamed to admit how many times I've read this. >.>;; And listened to it. There's a wonderful podcast here, by inkjunket.
I Trust You to Kill Me by ghostrunner
Most people find Specialist Barton so annoying as to be impossible to work with. He's been bounced off so many black ops teams it's probably a record. Agent Coulson is made of sterner stuff.
--Another essential reading. So much of my headcanon about the pair is based on these two fics. These two are an absolute must-read.
Stockholm Syndrome and other drugs by AlchemyAlice
In which Coulson is his frighteningly competent self, but this time, the Avengers notice.
--Well. This fic is basically so, so good that I have re-read it a number of times when I've needed something to pick me up, or reaffirm my love for them. Completely wonderful. BAMF Coulson is my favourite Coulson! :')))) I love how the Avengers show how much they appreciate him here. It's beautiful. :)

--In which Phil has feelings for Clint he doesn't know how to deal with. Aka how do they deal with a relationship.
The tags for this include "twisted and fluffy feelings". This has them all and more. Gorgeous.
Pigeonville, USA by sheafrotherdon
Day 214 on the campaign trail of Steve Rogers for President. Twenty-sixteen's turning out to be a hell of a year.
--People who know sheafrotherdon's writing will already know what an utter treat they're in for when they see a Clint/Phil fic from her, and this delivers 100%. Badass, wonderful, beautifully written. Love.
The Lovely Couple by Celli
"I'm sure we'll make a lovely couple," Clint said, and forced a smile. "Honey."
--Where Phil and Clint have to go undercover. Includes a totally badass Phil and a Clint who has all these feelings and doesn't know what to do with them. IN OTHER WORDS ALL MY FAVOURITE THINGS. <3
Something Quiet and Minor and Peaceful and Slow by torakowalski
On a normal night, it takes Phil three minutes, seventeen seconds to go from dressed to bed but tonight he’s working much slower than that, an unusual hesitance between movements.
--What the title says. This is gorgeous and wonderfully slow and domestic and fulfilling. I adore it. <3

Clint is choking and he can't fight his way clear.
--God, I love the way their relationship is portrayed here. How much they depend on each other, trust each other to have their back. Love this.
Professions by gqgqqt
“You had me a little worried, there,” Clint says, and nods him into the hotel room. “Thought you might've gotten lost on the way in.”
“Parking,” he replies, and clears his throat.
--Heed the warnings on this, guys, but god, GOD, so many of my kinks. Once again I adore the relationship between them, and how perfectly in character they are, and the verse this story explores. Fantastic writing, too. <3
Would the world spin round without us by ellievolia
Clint is sent to lay low in the English countryside, and Phil is sent along. Falling in love is not really something they planned for.
--Ugh, oh my god. SO MANY FEELS. All the domestic fluff, and slow build-up, and falling in love, and then stupid boys who don't know how to handle their feels. :( Ugh, wonderful. <333

Of all the bioships in all the United Terran Commonwealth Forces, you were assigned to mine.
--Utterly heartbreaking, but god, GOD, so, so good. I don't have the words. This story hit me so fucking hard, I totally bawled after I finished it and I had to go rec it to a bunch of people and yammer to a bunch of other people about it until my feels stopped trying to chew a hole through my chest. :( Fan-bloody-tastic.

In which Barton and Coulson gradually get a clue, get together and get stuck into life in SHIELD. Also known as The One With The Weapons-Grade Cock-Blocking.
--I'm... cheating a little with this one. It's actually a series, but otherwise I would have had to make twenty entries for all twenty stories and I'm totally lazy. This thing. The feels it gives me. Lanyon's writing. Absolutely essential reading for this pairing. I can't stress that enough. <3 If you want all the feels, and wonderful characterisation, and fantastic relationship portrayal, and gorgeous writing, you need to hit this up asafp. You're welcome. <3

Sooooo
foxxcub posted that NSFW picture of the naked WWII gunner and made the very valid point that there should be a story where Clint strips down to save Coulson and then just keeps, you know, fightin' bad guys in his birthday suit. And I agreed!
--God, the imagery in this. SO. HOT. I CAN'T EVEN. SO HOT.
A Different Kind of Love Story by someidiothasice
He doesn't delude himself. He knows that the life he leads, the life of an agent, isn't fair to a romantic partner.
--This is, quite honestly, the fic of my heart. I can't even tell you how much I love this, not just because someidiothasice wrote it for me, but because she somehow managed to reach inside my brain and heart and pull out EVERYTHING THAT MAKES ME TICK, every hope and dream and just. I love it. I can't even say anything more because I just don't have the words. Slow. Quiet. Beautifully written, it gives us a snapshop of Phil the agent who doesn't hope for much -- just that some day, maybe one day, there might be someone for him, too. God, just writing this is making me all wibbly. :')))
Disclosures by gqgqqt
Phil Coulson is miserable, distrusted by most of SHIELD, and still doesn't remember why. It's only going to get worse before it gets better.
--Is there anyone left who hasn't read this fic yet? It is an epic of epic proportions. As with most of gqgqqt's fics, do heed the warnings, but man. Man. This fic. The feels it gives me. It got to the point where
foxxcub and
laria_gwyn and I were reading it at more-or-less the same time AND HAD TO KEEP EMAILING EACH OTHER TO GET EACH OTHER THROUGH IT WITHOUT EXPLODING FROM ALL THE FEELINGS. :D Seriously, could show you the email threads. They are mostly incoherent CAPSLOCK, but even so. Go. Read. Die from feels overload.
hand over your heart by cherryvanilla
If a top secret file on Phil Coulson and Clint Barton's relationship existed, it would look something like this.
--Absolute perfection of a fic, okay. Smart, sassy, sharp, snappy, brilliant writing, amazing characterisation, this is sly and cheeky and all-round AWESOME. As many thumbs up for this fic as I can borrow from well-meaning zombies.
Homecoming by thatdamneddame
When Phil Coulson was twenty-three, he fell in love. It’s what people are supposed to do, fall in love and settle down, but for all Phil Coulson is a practical man, he’s never been one for convention.
--A brilliant snapshot of Phil Coulson, the man behind the suit. Beautifully realised, the writing is excellent, and god, god, how much do I love it when they're being fabulous BAMFs together?? THIS MUCH.
Started up the clocks by ellievolia
Sometimes relationships have to grow through friendship, pushing and pulling, pain, denial and regrets. Canon, set before-to-after Thor.
--Now, I love Ellie's writing. We write together a lot, and I appreciate that I may be biased, but this? I honestly think this story is the best thing she's ever done. So beautifully subtle, such mastery of words and emotions. I can't even. This... hits pretty deep, I'll admit that much.
By the Book by Perpetual Motion (perpetfic)
Coulson figures it out through standard procedure (rumor mill to threatening junior agents to that required weird conversation with one’s boss).
--Bamfery, cont. Also, protective!Clint. IDK THAT I NEED TO SAY ANY MORE. But in case you're not sold yet? Gah, them. This is Clint-with-feelings, and for me this is ALWAYS THE BEST OF THINGS. <333
They Always Said We Were The Lucky Ones by torakowalski
Clint’s hands never shake. He can take down an enemy sniper at one hundred feet in driving rain while bleeding out from a bullet wound in the stomach (that’s not theoretical; he’s tried it) but his hands never shake.
--More bamfery, and Clint-with-feelings, and injured!Phil, and worried!Clint. Er, for me there's no further recommendation needed. >.>
Now We've Learned To Kiss The Sky by torakowalski
In which Phil asks Clint to marry him, and they have a bit of trouble making it to the damned ceremony.
--Delicious. This has banter, and feels, and Clint and Phil being totally married with or without the piece of paper. :D Another 'they're so married' fic, but man, way up there with the very best of them.
Launch your assault by foxxcub
Phil Coulson was more than halfway through his six year plan, and everything was chugging along nicely. Unfortunately, he hadn’t foreseen a cocky junior Art major waltzing into his life, or his floor.
--A.k.a. THE OTHER FIC OF MY BLOODY HEART. College AU, and GDI, there isn't a single thing I don't adore about this fic, to the extent that I ended up writing 12K of follow-up because I couldn't bear to part with them. Gorgeously written, this will make you melt, rip your heart out, and restore it sweetly back into your chest by the end. <333
The Vest Is Yet To Come by kellifer_fic
Clint Barton is not Hawkeye at home. Apparently the only person surprised by this is Phil.
--Hilarious and hot and unghhh suit porn, on Clint. Need I say more? :D Loved it.
Want your kiss (‘cause I just can’t miss with a good luck charm like you) by aliassmith
Five times Clint and Phil kissed for luck and one time they didn't have to.
--This is, to put it mildly, AMAZING. I love, LOVE aliassmith's take on them. Cheeky Clint, unimpressed Phil, lots of kissing, scorching UST and later actual proper sex unghhhh. I adore this story more than I can say. I love Clint in it, and I love Phil's reaction to Clint's antics, and just, the entire thing makes me want to do a whole body squirm and squee.
10, 9, 8, car by pollyrepeat
Clint was pretty sure he'd seen this movie. Like a lot of things since he'd joined the Avengers, it had been a lot funnier when it wasn't his life.
--I only read this fic a couple weeks ago, but MAN, I LOVE IT. There's an excellent subtlety at Clint's frantic worry, a deftness of hand at the storytelling that I was seriously impressed with. Not to mention that the concept of Groundhog Day, however cliche, is given a thorough brushing off in this, and it works beautifully. I loved this fic a lot.
And There Are No Words For That by torakowalski
If this is what the middle of the night is usually like, Clint is prepared to visit it way more often.
--This continues Tora's trend of slow, beautiful, deliciously domestic and intimate Clint/Phil fics. Since these happen to be my favourite, I regret nothing about reccing a whole bunch of them here. XD
Ten Beats to Start the Song by Perpetual Motion (perpetfic)
Clint, Coulson, and starting a relationship in ten prompts.
--Oh Jesus, but this was gorgeous. Ten cliches/tropes, ten ways to take shameless advantage of my unreasonable love for them. This is way more than ten kinds of awesome -- sick Clint and protective Phil, what's not to like? <3

Coulson is a young agent new to Shield from somewhere else. He's still learning, not yet unflappable. Clint is a "teenage deliquent/circus runaway/on his last chance with the law" when Fury spots him. Fury makes Coulson recruit/train/mentor an angry teenage Clint.

cobweb_diamond knows it's superb, and this makes no exception. She assures me it will be Clint/Coulson by the end, which it's headed for right now. I am loving the fuck out of Clint and Natasha being besties in the meantime, and a bloody superb Coulson, and Clint and his ~feeeeels, poor puppy. ♥ Updates frequently so far.
Annnndddd.... I'm going to stop here for now. :D This ought to keep everyone occupied until I can get a second wind/read allllll the fic I've missed. Again, please do spam the comments with recs! :) And in case anyone's interested, my own Clint/Coulson stories can be found here on AO3.
Feel free to link to this post, no need to ask! It's not getting locked any time soon, and I know how much of a hassle creating one's own rec lists can be. :) And let's be honest, I'm all about spreading the sniper/agent love! ♥
