Not at all! I'm thinking HIGH SCHOOL AU!! I have a bit of a weakness for those.

EITHER Danny and his family move to Hawaii when he's in his final year of high school, and he gets enrolled in the same school as Steve OR Steve gets sent off to the mainland by his dad and gets shipped off to New Jersey for his final year -- and gets enrolled in Danny's school.

It all depends on the intricacies of canon -- I'ma have to re-watch the early episodes to work out exactly when Steve got shipped off to the mainland, and whether I can make it follow canon or go total AU on their arses and go with option one.

In any case, I want Danny pining after the hotshot Football captain with an IQ off the charts and a heart of gold. I want Steve being Steve -- adrenaline junky, putting himself in danger for the sake of others, saving a geeky kid from being bullied -- the works. I want Danny being the wiseass class clown, the guy who stands up for the less popular kids, who's loyal to a fault, and who steals Steve's heart without him realising.

Or, y'know, that sort of stuff. Ahem. I may have been thinking about this a little too much recently.

Strange thing, this. I keep prompting stuff all over the place, and then it's stuck in my head on a loop of "yes please", and then I HAVE TO WRITE IT, because I want it SO MUCH, and patience has never been my strong suit. :D?

Besides, it's at least partly foxxcub's fault, teasing me with bb!boys and talking about how adorable bb!Danny and bb!Steve would be all the time. <3

And then Danny will bristle at being rescued, and will be vicious in return, and then will feel guilty later that he never said thank you, and then YOU KNOW THAT Steve as the top student will be assigned to help Danny settle! And Danny will grudgingly thank him at the end of the day, and Steve will ask him how much of his soul just died, and DANNY WILL GRUMBLE AND AVOID HIS EYES AND IT WILL BE ALL KINDS OF ADORABLE.

I just can't stop thinking about how sweet and awkward and lovely they will be around each other. And maybe Kono will be a first-year that's always getting into trouble with her smart mouth? Instant Kono + Danny = BFFs! And Chin might me some sort of teaching instructor or something?

I hope it will end up being hearts-worthy!

Because Steve is big and tall and friendly and popular, and then he starts hanging around with this short, prickly little dork who's always getting detention for mouthing off and who gets into fights with, like, entire *groups* of bullies because he just doesn't know when to shut up, and poor Steve gets caught in the middle because, well, no one understands why he's hanging around the tiny little mouthy dweeb.

And maybe Danny hates it here because, well, I dunno, his parents died or split up and he has to come live with some stranger here who claims to be family but he doesn't know them from Eve, and he misses his parents and his friends in Jersey and nothing here is familiar, not even the water, and...

Christ. I need to stop before *I* start writing this fic. :P

I'm denititely leaning towards transfer student Danny, for all the reasons you relate above. :D

Dayum, I really like the idea that Danny's parents die or split up or something (poor bb!Danny ;___;) and he has to come and live with a relative until he graduates and can go to uni!

And of course he hates the place, but maybe it's not quite as horrible as he first thought, because there's Kono, and her cousin works with Steve's dad, and Kono and Steve are quite friendly, and there's this girl who hangs out with Steve, Catherine or something, who is kind of kick-ass, and Danny doesn't understand why he gets this funny feeling in his stomach when she and Steve look at each other; but she's just so friendly, how could he not like her, and...

I'll stop now, okay. OTHER STUFF TO FINISH BEFORE I START THIS. OH GOD. I got a feeling that this may turn out to be EPIC.

Well, by some bizarre stroke of luck, one of the first people I met on LJ is from Hawaii, and she's just offered to be my research resource, for which I'm more grateful than I can say -- but if/when she points me towards stuff, I'll let you know! My biggest issue is with the language -- because language is kind of a kink of mine, in that its proper use can make me all hot and melty, so I want to be as accurate as possible in my writing.

I think we'd have to, really, if we want to get the feel of it right. And Danny can grumble some more about it being some sort of coded exchange, and can't they just speak English already?! And then Steve will smile at him, and Danny will get a little weak at the knees, which will only annoy him more.

Re: brainstorming... can you actually remember what Steve said about his dad sending him away? When did that happen? Because I have this idea -- what if Steve gets shipped off to mainland after he graduates, and he joins the Navy, and sort of loses touch with Danny? And Danny goes back to Jersey, and becomes a cop, and meets Rachel, and has Gracie, and because the world hates him, once they divorce Rachel moves to the same pineapple-infested hellhole that he'd had to endure for a whole year once, and that reminds him of bloody Steve at every corner, Steve whom he's never quite managed to forget, not even when he'd fallen in love with Rachel, there's always been this niggling pain somewhere in his chest that Steve had to go away, and Rachel has always wondered why Danny watches CNN and foreign correspondents obsessively, but Danny's always put her off when she asked; and then one day, a couple months after he's back on that damn island, he gets a call, and Steve's dad is dead, and he goes to investigate (he asks for the case, because, of course, he knew McGarrett senior, if only vaguely), and then he hears that voice that has haunted his dreams for the past ten years telling him to drop his weapon...

What do you think? Too much? Melodramatic? Should I have it end happily ever after back in high school? But this damn idea won't leave me alone! Grr.

Oh, that's awesome! But honestly? That's two different fics. One high school AU with a happy ending, and one other AU, where they met in high school and Steve broke Danno's poor, exposed heart, and then Danno comes back to Hawaii and there are feeeeeeliiiiiings again.

If I were writing this, WHICH I'M NOT, the High School AU would be Big Bang-length, and the reunion story would probably be shorter and more angst-filled. Just my opinion.

I think I'm just going to start writing, and see where it takes me. I still kinda really want to make it all one story -- where there's the whole high school romance in the first part, and they fall in love, and then maybe Danny has to go away just for a couple of weeks over the hols to stay in Jersey, and that's when Steve's mom dies, and by the time he comes back everyone's shellshocked and Steve and Mary are gone and Danny's poor heart breaks in so many pieces, because on one hand, poor darling Steve, but on the other hand he feels kind of deserted, since Steve left without a word apart from a short letter that has suspicious drop-like patches on it, promising to keep in touch with Danny, and then the second half of the story happens.

Meh, I still don't know. Like I said, I'll start writing and see what happens, see where the story will take me. It usually works!

But yeah. If there's a good resource for the Hawaiian language out there (as in, how it can be properly inserted into English the way they do on the show) and maybe some stuff about how Hawaii is equipped to deal with natural disasters, that would be awesome!
