Summary It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a spouse -- or the nearest set of curtains to hide behind, if you were to believe Mr Charles Xavier. Little does he know that he himself will soon put test to that very truth.
Notes: First of all, my undying grattitude to zarah5, without whom this story would not exist. She was wildly enthusiastic when I first mentioned the idea, and she cheerleaded, supplied me with fantastic music, and betaed this thing until it's the more-or-less coherent version you see before you today. I will say that I did not re-read the book or re-watch the 1995 or 2005 films as I was writing -- all the dialogue and events within come from my own memory, and thus portray a mix of the original text, the BBC's and Joe Wright's rather excellent adaptations, so that my favourite moments of all three were reflected. This story follows the plot of Pride and Prejudice throughout, but certain changes have been made to accommodate the fact that Miss Lizzy Bennett is now Mr Charles Xavier. A soundtrack to this fic, most of which is zarah5's work, can be found here. I am also excessively grateful to lark for compiling and posting In Revolution, a wonderful Charles/Erik mix that carried me through to the end of this monster of a story. So this is an awfully old fic, written almost a year ago, last August for the H/D Travel Fair. I don't know why I never posted it here; probably something to do with those pesky Arthur and Eames taking over my life back then! ;P But the last few days I've been heeding altri_uccelli's excellent H/D fic recs, and I've been slowly but surely remembering why I love that pairing so much. And also that was the first time that me and Altri talked properly, over that fic; and for that I will be forever grateful for writing it, because it brought her into my life. <3

So here it is, posted to my LJ for posterity's sake.

Turns out it's a good thing my dissertation hand-in date is pushed back to 18th May, because for the past two days I have felt like my head was going to explode, a mix of hay fever and inflamed sinuses from hell. I feel like utter crap, my blood pressure has been playing up, in short -- I fucking hate mid-spring.

So I've no idea whether this thing is any good, but people seemed to like it, so. That's good enough for me, I guess. perspi did this absolutely, utterly delightful tag to this ficlet, over here. Author Notes: vvu asked for a Noir AU, with Eames as a conman/thief and Arthur as an uptight detective/policeman. Title comes from "505" by Arctic Monkeys, which is one of my favourite Arthur/Eames songs out there. Massive kudos to Raymond Chandler, whom I tapped for inspiration while I was writing this, and a huge thank you to my fantastic beta zolac_no_miko for the quick and thorough job! I've made some changes to the final draft; all remaining mistakes are my own.
